The earliest part of the Inn was constructed prior to 1805. Associated with some of the most prominent citizens and visitors in Rockbridge County’s history, the Inn has a long-standing relationship with both Washington & Lee University and Virginia Military Institute. Through the years faculty, staff, alumni, and students from these institutions stayed or lived at the Inn.

In 2007, The Dutch Inn's award winning renovation included monitored fire alarm systems, and central heating and air conditioning. There is a grocery store, restaurant, and coin-operated laundry onsite.
